Projected Winner

How did everyone’s election night turn out? Man, it was like New Years, Christmas and the Fourth of July smashed together in a flurry of numbing statistical figures and political pundits. Well, here’s my little salute of such a historical night.

It’s Business Time

Well, this whole week has been a blast down here at SCAD, as we celebrate the 2008 Savannah Film Festival, an event full of proud producers, witty directors, talented actors and wide-eyed students. And of course if you’re going to make the most of all the movers and shakers running around, you need to carpet bomb the place with business cards.

Good thing I just got in a shipment of brand new Base14 mini cards this Monday, thanks to our good friends at Moo Printing. Their mini cards are half the size of standard business cards and can have as many different designs as you’d like. So I made two varieties: the official corporate brand Base14 card, and the cuter cartoon design. Who is that small blue character you might ask? Well, we’ll be revealing that in the not-too-distant future. Consider this an early viral marketing campaign. Continue Reading »

The Distant Future, The Distant Future!

It is the distant future. The year 2000… Things are very different since the robotic uprising of the mid-nineties…
– Flight of the Conchords

Halloween is almost here, folks. And here at Base14 we couldn’t help but salute the much-loved HBO comedy show, Flight of the Conchords. If you haven’t been living under a rock for the last two years, you’ll know that FotC made robots cool again with their aptly titled song and music video: Robots. So of course, just as many other FotC fans are doing this season, I had to make my own Robo-Boogie Costume. The best part is: I’ve documented the entire process below, so everyone at home can follow along!

Some Design Work

Every now and then it’s good to return to my roots and dabble in some print design. So when my friend Christine asked me to design her business card, I got right to work. It’s a good neo-minimalistic design with a bit of iconic flare (notice the tiny scissors logo in the upper left hand corner). Would cutting along the line accomplish anything? Well, no… it’s just cute. Credit goes to Christine for the idea. I just made it beautiful.

Film School: First Thoughts

Well, it’s about time I write a bit about life here in graduate film school.  As you may remember, I’m currently enrolled in the Film and Television department at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Let me begin by saying Savannah, and all the events and speakers that SCAD brings in, is incredible. I have a speaker, seminar or gallery exhibit I want to go to practically every day. It’s terrific.

The real downer so far has really been the lack of stimulation coming from my classes themselves. When graduates are enrolled in the programs here, a panel evaluates their abilities based on their portfolios and transcripts and judges how prepared they are for the graduate curriculum. This often results in the applicant being assigned preliminary classes to fill in the knowledge holes. I was lucky enough to not be assigned any, but so far, from talking to peers, these 300/400 level undergraduate classes are more challenging than our 700 graduate classes. What gives? I’ve had enough free time to actually hang out with friends and work on the next Base14 movie. Both these I like to do, but while I’m down here I’d like to learn something I don’t already know. Or at least, learn it a bit faster. Where’s the fire hose, boys? I’m thirsty.

In a bit of condolence, I did work on my first filming project last week. We shot a two-page script for sound design class. This coming week we’ll be bringing the actors into our sound studios and conducting automated dialogue replacement on the film, just like the pros. Now that’s pretty exciting.

More to come on my classes.

Lights... I've always wanted to use lights.

I've always wanted to use real lights.

Back to School

Could it be? The triumphant return of Base14 Comics? Well, it was supposed to be. Three weeks ago.

Now that I’m a grad student happily nestled in Savannah, the plan was to begin publishing a weekly comic in the student newspaper, The District. But the comic was pushed back from the first issue to the second, then to the third, and now I’ve gotten word that this week will be the last printed edition of The District ever. Looks like this syndicated strip got canceled before it ever got published! Ah well. Below is the one and only strip of Base14 Comics that was meant for The District, but didn’t make it out. Naturally, it’s meant for a bit earlier release than the end of September.

That’s Pretty Suite

Well, on Tuesday Adobe Creative Suite 4 was announced officially, although there’s still no word on when exactly we designers and developers can get our hands on it. Or, in my case, when I would be getting my hands on it if I could afford it.

Well if I can’t get it, I can do the next best thing. Make cool wallpaper! Adobe sent me an ad in my email this morning for the software and I thought it look pretty good, so I converted into a saucy background for my computer desktop. Now you can enjoy it too! if you’re an Adobe fan, go ahead and give it a whirl.
