When I write the scripts for my strips I seldom include a lot of detail of what is actually going on, they're mostly dialogue. So when I go to draw the strips, I invent extra visual elements to go along with the dialogue. In this case, the script called for no sort of action. So to make the strip more interesting, I made Phil playing Glitch at chess, even though Glitch has no lines. To integrate it even better, I added Phil's "Check" in the third panel.
